About Boys From The Blackstuff

Audiences will be transported back to 1980s Liverpool in this drama, which follows five unemployed men who are desperate to provide for their families in the face of economic upheaval.

The 1982 television show written by Alan Bleasdale won three BAFTA Awards and was nominated for five more. For two decades, Bleasdale has fielded requests for a new version of the show. When he saw political playwright James Graham’s Sherwood, he knew Graham was the one to collaborate with to bring this show to the stage.

Boys from the Blackstuff in London immediately succeeded with a sellout run in 2023 at Liverpool’s Royal Court. It also earned numerous positive critic reviews, including a Broadway World review that said, “In 2023, I described Boys from the Blackstuff as ‘the must see production of the year’. Without a doubt, I can say it is not only the must see production of 2024, but one of the greatest theatre productions you will ever see.”

More information about Boys From The Blackstuff

Boys from the Blackstuff is a play that has a talented cast, including Nathan McMullen (Misfits) as Chrissie, Aron Julius (Death on the Nile) as Loggo, Philip Whitchurch (Billy Elliot, A View From the Bridge) as George, Mark Womack (The Responder) as Dixie, and Barry Sloane (Revenge) as Yosser. Audiences will be amazed by the cast's versatility, including Sloane, who can easily transition from joking banter in one moment to anger in the next, and Whitchurch, whose one-liners add moments of levity.

It's not just a talented cast; the creative team working on Boys from the Blackstuff is also exceptional. Kate Wasserberg (Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Alice in Wonderland) is the director at the show's helm, and playwright James Graham (Tammy Fay on Broadway, Sherwood) adapted the work for the stage. Amy Jane Cook, who was nominated for Best Set Design at the Off West End Awards in 2022 is the set and costume designer. Lighting design is by Ian Scott (Fawlty Towers), and fight direction is by Rachel Bown-Williams (Howl).

What to watch for

  • The struggles explored within the show are just as relevant today as when the series aired. Writer James Graham told BBC, "Sometimes in Boys From the Blackstuff people had no jobs, and in the modern age sometimes people have three jobs - but they are still living with the economic pressures and the in-work poverty that these characters had, and the lack of hope."
  • In the television series, the character Yosser Hughes' children were played by writer Alan Bleasedale's children.
  • Video imagery in the background of some of the scenes in the play, including one scene with waves, helps to bring the performance to life and heighten many moments in the show.
  • The television series was first aired three years after Margaret Thatcher became prime minister. While most of the scripts were written before she came into power, the work has been considered a great portrayal of how her policies affected working-class people, especially in northern cities.
