About Appropriate on Broadway

A deceased patriarch, a family reunion, a buried secret — these may seem like familiar ingredients of an American drama, but the eight-time Tony Award-nominated play Appropriate, by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, tackles them all in fresh, startling, and darkly comedic ways. Starring Emmy Award winner Sarah Paulson and Golden Globe nominee Corey Stoll, both 2024 Tony nominees, Appropriate on Broadway is a searing new play from one of theatre’s most exciting and award-winning voices.

In Appropriate, now returning to New York after an acclaimed Off-Broadway production, the dysfunctional Lafayette family returns to their Arkansas plantation following the recent death of their father. What starts as a warm-enough reunion full of old wisecracks and sibling affection turns into something more mysterious: an estranged sibling shows up and a dark relic is unearthed on the land revealing an unsavory, grotesque part of the Lafayette family past.

See it if electrifying family drama full of mordant humor; brilliantly exposes legacy white appropriation of blk lives/identity; uniformly fine cast

Don’t see it if you can’t tolerate the message: the uncovering of a white family's dark secrets reveals the ugliness of America

More information about Appropriate on Broadway

Premiering in 2013 at Signature Theatre, Appropriate in New York was celebrated as a blazing play that overturns the classic family drama. The New York Times raved, that Appropriate is "piercingly clear, with carefully drawn characters who speak in crisp and fluid dialogue. It’s a remarkable and devious play.”

Now, the play comes to Broadway starring Sarah Paulson, now known for her Emmy-winning onscreen career. Appropriate is directed by new-play maverick Lila Neugebauer, who has staged similar ensemble works such as The Wolves (for which she won the Obie Award), Miles for Mary (Drama Desk Award nomination), and Mrs. Murray’s Menagerie (Lucille Lortel Award nomination).

What to watch for

  • Sarah Paulson leads the cast. The American Horror Story star returns to Broadway for the first time in 13 years as Toni, the divorced eldest daughter in the play.
  • Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ plays explore race and legacy. In his play Gloria, Jacobs-Jenkins exposed how surviving magazine executives, in the wake of an office shooting, look to use the story for their own competitive gain. In An Octoroon, he employs blackface to dissect identity. Now, in Appropriate on Broadway, the playwright looks at how one family chooses to manipulate and — per the title — appropriate the disturbing findings on their father’s plantation.
  • Jacobs-Jenkins is one of today’s most celebrated writers. The playwright has won the Paula Vogel Award, was named a MacArthur Fellow, and has twice been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
  • Second Stage gives acclaimed works a new production. The company was founded in 1979 to produce “second stagings” of American plays by living writers that deserved to reach a wider audience. That mission expanded to producing new plays by a emerging writers, which has helped launch countless careers.
