About The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

See the first major New York revival of this Tony Award-winning musical. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee musical runs at New World Stages starting in November. This heartfelt and hilarious show will continue through February 15 on a limited engagement. The revival marks the 20th anniversary of the 2005 musical about students competing in a spelling competition, all to win a trip to the National Bee in Washington, DC, and a very shiny trophy.

Experience ...Spelling Bee in New York to see young students more than compete: they try to connect, fall in love, and deal with all the issues of growing up. The late William Finn's score features an assembly of songs funny ("My Unfortunate Erection") and moving ("The I Love You Song") that have become beloved musical theatre fixtures. More information about The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's winning, high-energy musical has been staged all over the country: in theaters, but also in schools and assembly halls where actual spelling bees may take place. Now, it returns to New York on the 20th anniversary of its Broadway bow. That premiere was an auspicious one, making stars of original cast members Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The theatre legend James Lapine directed, and Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her smart, engaging, and hilarious book.

This revival, directed and choreographed by Danny Mefford, follows Mefford's star-studded production at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC from last year. That production featured Bonnie Milligan, Noah Galvin, Beanie Feldstein, and others. Also back from the Kennedy Center run will be costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer David Weiner, and sound designer Haley Parcher. New for the Off-Broadway creative team will be scenic designer Teresa L. Williams
