About Caroline, or Change

Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and with performances that'll take your breath away, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE is an imaginative and moving story of strength, revolution and hope. With a “voice full of raw soul that shreds the heart, and sets it soaring” (Times, *****), don’t miss a career-defining central performance from SHARON D. CLARKE in the five-star musical which changes everything.

Louisiana, 1963. Revolution is in the air, though not so much for Caroline, the poorly paid maid toiling endlessly in the sweltering basement of the Gellman household. It’s a fantastical, magical place amidst the piles of laundry and singing washing machines, especially for eight-year-old Noah Gellman who sneaks downstairs to see her whenever he can. Yet a simple gesture to leave more money in Caroline’s pocket is about to test who and how far the winds of change can ever really reach…

Written by Tony Kushner (Angels in America), composed by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home) and directed by Michael Longhurst (Amadeus), this sensational five-star musical transfers to the Playhouse Theatre following sell-out runs in Chichester and Hampstead.

More information about Caroline, or Change

Caroline Thibodeaux is a single mother of four working as a maid for the Jewish Gellman family in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Eight-year-old Noah Gellman is struggling to form a relationship with his stepmother and begins to idiolise the family’s underpaid maid. When Noah starts to leave money in his trouser pockets and Caroline is told to keep any money she finds, not only is she insulted, but the gesture opens up a raft of racial, social, and economic divisions. Despite her own children desperately needing food, clothing, and shoes, Caroline refuses to accept the money. Outside of the laundry room, the Civil Rights Movement and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy sets further political change into motion.

Written by Tony Kushner (“Angels in America”) and with a score by Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”), “Caroline, Or Change” is a witty, inspiring musical about political and social change in 1960s America. With musical influences that blend gospel, Motown, and Jewish folk song, the story is loosely inspired by memories of Kushner’s own childhood growing up as a young Jewish boy in Louisiana.

What to watch for

The show opened at New York’s Public Theatre in 2003, before transferring to Broadway, where it was nominated for six 2004 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Although the 2006 London production at the National Theatre never transferred to the West End, it won the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Sharon D. Clarke reprises her role as Caroline after a critically-acclaimed, sell-out run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2017 and Hampstead Theatre in early 2018.
