About War Horse

The National Theatre’s internationally-acclaimed smash-hit War Horse returns to London this autumn for a limited season at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, an exciting new venue located just steps away from Wembley Stadium.

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Hailed as a ‘landmark theatre event’ (Time), War Horse is an unforgettable theatrical event, not to be missed.

Children under 3 will not be admitted. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by and sat next to the accompanying adult. They may not sit on their own in the auditorium.

More information about War Horse

Weaving the tangled threads of patriotism, friendship, and undying loyalty, “War Horse” is an international phenomenon that has gripped audiences from America and Australia to the West End and beyond. Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, Nick Stafford’s play is one of the most audacious productions in theatrical history. Centering on the unbreakable relationship between two young boys and one incredible steed in the early 1900s, this sweeping show delves into the horrors and existential quagmires of World War I, while also entrancing audiences with larger-than-life horse puppets — designed by the Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa — resulting in a stunning spectacle that is finally returning to the London stage.

Directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliott, “War Horse” made its world premiere at the National Theatre in London in 2007, and enjoyed two successful runs ending in 2009. This equestrian epic became an award-winning smash that ran for seven years at the New London Theatre in the West End. “War Horse” opened on Broadway in 2011 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Play. As it tallied up more than 3,000 performances in the West End, “War Horse” also became a worldwide hit, boasting tours in China, the Netherlands, South Africa and Australia, among others.

What to watch for

Kit Harington — who played Jon Snow in the generation-defining series “Game of Thrones” — was the first to play the role of Albert in the National Theatre production of “War Horse” back in 2007.

The initial idea for the novel came to author Michael Morpurgo after spending time with three locals in Devonshire who worked directly with horses or had served in the Great War.

“War Horse” began as a children's book, and was first published in 1982, but the stage version and the Steven Spielberg film (2011) feature a decidedly darker and grittier edge that more vividly represents the brutal conflicts of the early 20th century.

It is estimated that more than 10 million horses lost their lives in World War I, and this critically acclaimed show stands tall as a tribute to the sacrifice of these noble animals.
