In Juno and the Paycock be transported to 1922-era Dublin, shortly after the Irish Civil War breaks out. The show centres around the Boyle family living in a tenement and struggling to make ends meet. Despite the dire financial straits, 'Captain' Jack Boyle, the father, doesn't work and spends all his time and money at the pub. When the family receives an unexpected inheritance, will that be the solution to the problems that they've been seeking?
This black-humoured play is a tale of a mother's resilience in the face of struggle. As J. Smith Cameron, who is playing the role of Juno Boyle, the mother, said, "Juno and the Paycock is not simply a brilliant piece of theatre but an eternally relevant play so long as people must endure violent repression. The prospect of revisiting this work in the company of the great director Matthew Warchus and the truly legendary Mark Rylance absolutely floors me; I couldn't be more thrilled."
Joining J. Smith-Cameron (Juno Boyle) and Mark Rylance (‘Captain’ Jack Boyle) are Paul Hilton (‘Joxer’ Daly), Aisling Kearns (Mary Boyle), Eimhin Fitzgerald Doherty (Johnny Boyle), Ingrid Craigie (Mrs Tancred), Anna Healy (Mrs Maisie Madigan), Chris Walley (Charles Bentham), Seán Duggan (‘Needle’ Nugent), Leo Hanna (Jerry Devine), Jessica Cervi, Caolan McCarthy, Bryan Moriarty, John Rice and Jacinta Whyte.
