“Touching the Void” is a gripping play of endurance, survival, and man versus nature. Set in 1985, the story follows the epic journey of two mountain climbers trying to reach the summit of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. However, throughout their descent, things take a turn for the worse when one of the climbers breaks his leg. Forced by a decision of life and death, his climbing partner decides to leave him behind, in the hope that one of them survives the daredevilish climb. Simon is then left to fend for himself for three days as he crawls his way back to camp, starved and dehydrated.
“Touching the Void” first premiered at Bristol Old Vic and was directed by Tom Morris. After its successful run, the play embarked on a UK tour where it concludes at the Duke of York’s Theatre in the West End for a limited engagement. The play also made its overseas debut in Hong Kong, Perth, and Inverness.

“Touching the Void” is based on the 1988 non-fictional book of the same name, written by mountaineer Joe Simpson as he recalls his near-death experience climbing the Siula Grande.
The gripping book went on to become a docudrama survival film in 2003, which PBS listed in their “100 Greatest Documentaries of all time.” The film stars climbers Simpson and Yates who had not seen each other in more than 10 years until collaborating to make the film.
David Grieg has adapted the original book to the stage, and is known for his previous stage adaptations including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Peter Pan.”
