Following her recent award-winning successes on Company and Angels in America, Marianne Elliott co-directs Death of a Salesman with Miranda Cromwell, who worked as Associate Director on both shows. Together, they bring a unique vision to one of the greatest plays of the twentieth century, seen through the eyes of an African-American family.
Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Suits, Selma) makes his West End stage debut as Willy Loman, with Olivier Award-winning Sharon D. Clarke as Linda Loman.

“Death of a Salesman” follows Willy Loman and his family as they navigate their way through the harsh reality of 1940s New York City. Willy tries to secure a future for his family by travelling the country as a salesman, but this job eventually takes its toll on him and he starts to unravel. He begins to confuse his memories with the present when his two sons, Biff and Happy, visit. As ghosts of the past threaten to catch up with Willy, it becomes clear that it is too much for him to handle, despite his wife Linda’s unwavering support.
Marianne Elliott, who previously reimagined Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” in 2018, and Miranda Cromwell explore Willy Loman’s descent through the eyes of an African-American family, and in doing so create a whole new dimension to this classic play. “Death of a Salesman” is the ultimate depiction of the struggle for the American Dream and the lengths people are prepared to take in order to achieve it.
What to watch for
Often considered one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, “Death of a Salesman” has been revived on Broadway four times since it opened in 1949, winning three Tony Awards for Best Revival.
Anna Fleischle’s design, made up of dark boxes as the set and sudden lighting changes, represents Willy’s change of state of mind and the hazy lens through which he sees those around him.
Sharon D Clarke is a two-time Olivier Award winner. Her first award came in 2014 for her performance in “The Amen Corner”, and her second in 2019 for her portrayal as Caroline Thibodeaux in “Caroline, Or Change,” a role she will reprise on Broadway in 2020.
Wendell Pierce previously appeared in “The Piano Lesson” and “Serious Money” on Broadway and makes his London stage debut with this revival.
