The Drifters Girl musical made its much-anticipated West End premiere at the Garrick Theatre in 2021, starring British Queen of Soul Beverley Knight as Faye Treadwell. As an African-American woman, Faye was a pioneer in the music industry, and, from the 1960s onwards, she battled legal challenges to retain the name of The Drifters and ensure their legacy as one of the world’s most iconic vocal groups.
Now Broadway leading lady and Grammy nominee Felicia Boswell brings her incredible star power to the role of Faye, leading The Drifters Girl London production. She’s joined by a sensational company, playing the numerous members of The Drifters and inviting you for some “Kissin’ in the Back Row of the Movies”: Adam J Bernard (Dreamgirls), Matt Henry (Kinky Boots), Tarinn Callender (Hamilton) and Tosh Wanogho-Maud (Showboat).
Featuring all your favourite hits from the band, including “Save the Last Dance For Me”, “Under the Boardwalk”, “Saturday Night at the Movies” and “Stand By Me”, this is a must for all Drifters fans – but the London run ends this October, so don’t wait too long. Did you know that The Drifters had more than 60 members passing through their ranks over the decades? In fact, some past members joined forces to make their own versions of the band, which is why Faye Treadwell had to fight in the courts to retain The Drifters’ name and identity. That conflict forms the spine of The Drifters Girl musical.
Faye was also motivated to provide for her family. Following the death of her husband George Treadwell, she became responsible for The Drifters, and the sole parent to their daughter Tina. It was actually Tina who had the idea for the show, and she has been an active member of its development process, returning the favour to her pioneering mother and ensuring that Faye’s achievements are celebrated.
The Drifters Girl made its world premiere at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal in October 2021, before transferring to London’s Garrick Theatre the following month. It was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and Beverley Knight was also nominated for her lead performance.
