Hollywood films are now cinematic blockbusters, using countless special effects to create new worlds. But just over a century ago, best-selling movies didn’t even feature any talking. Singin’ in the Rain is inspired by this silent movie era, centering on fictional movie actor Don Lockwood. He’s a big-time movie star that’s cast in all the big blockbusters, but when he’s cast in a “talkie” film, Don will have to do something different — speak on screen.

His co-star Lina Lamont has her own struggles too, as her squeaky voice doesn’t match up with her appearance. So for Lina to keep being a beloved Hollywood starlet, actress Kathy Seldon lends her voice to Lina's part. In a cinematic love triangle, can Kathy capture Don’s heart and make it on screen?

It’s all lights, camera, action in Singin’ in the Rain, playing at Sadler’s Wells in 2021. This Golden Age musical will make you smile from ear to ear. If you’re sitting near the front, you may even get splashed on by the rain! Don’t wait for the storm clouds to pass by this summer. Wear your rain coat, pack your umbrella and see Singin’ in the Rain in London.

What To Watch Out For

  • Adam Cooper will reprise the role of Don Lockwood in Singin’ in the Rain in London. Cooper first played Don Lockwood, the role made famous by Gene Kelly in 2011, and played the role for the Singin’ in the Rain section at the Royal Variety Performance.
  • Singin’ in the Rain uses a lot of water each night to create real life rain on stage. Over 14,000 litres of water is used for the cast to splash about in. But all water is reused throughout the run to minimise water wastage.
  • The Singin’ in the Rain musical was first seen on screen in the 1950s, starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. The iconic MGM score features songs including “Make ‘em Laugh” and “Good Morning.”
  • The West End premiere of Singin’ in the Rain was in 1983, and starred entertainer Tommy Steele as Do Lockwood.
