More information about ANNA X

ANNA X comes to the West End as part of the RE:EMERGE season, and ANNA X tickets are available now.

Art curator Anna and tech startup CEO Ariel are living the high life in the New York art scene. Caught in a whirlwind of fashion shows and wild parties, they desperately climb the social ladder alongside their peers and find themselves willing to do anything to keep up. Anna claims she’s worth $60 million and has the designer clothes and stacks of cash to prove it, but the bill always ends up with someone else at the end of the night. Armed with only a popular Instagram account, a knowledge of art and cool confidence, she manages to manipulate her way into the upper echelons of society. How long can she and Ariel keep the game going before it all comes crashing down?

A reimagining of a true story, ANNA X invites you into a world of New York socialites, front-row fashion shows, and wild parties. You’ll be drawn into Anna and Ariel’s toxic relationship as you watch them lie and manipulate their way through the city’s art scene, sending them careening from one party to the next.

ANNA X is a new play written by Joseph Charlton and directed by Daniel Raggett and features sound design by Mike Winship and video and set design by Mikaela Liakata and Tal Yarden.

ANNA X premiered at the London VAULT Festival in 2019, where it won the Origins Award for Outstanding New Work, and has now transferred to The Harold Pinter Theatre as part of the RE:EMERGE season. If you’re looking for a show to draw you into the glamorous world of the New York elite, then ANNA X will take you there.

What to watch for

  • ANNA X is a reimagining of the true story of Anna Sorokin, who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress named Anna Delvey and scammed New York high society members out of $200,000. In 2019 Sorokin was found guilty of grand larceny and theft, and was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution of $199,000.
  • Playwright Joseph Charlton previously worked as a journalist for The Independent and brings his investigative journalism skills to the script. Brilliant Jerks, his previous show at the VAULT Festival in 2018, is now being adapted into an eight-part series for the BBC.
  • Emma Corrin, who plays Anna, is most famous for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix series The Crown. In 2021 she won a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her performance.
  • Director Daniel Raggett was Associate Director for Network at the National Theatre in 2017, which starred Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad fame and was directed by Ivo van Hove. It later transferred to the Belasco Theatre in New York.
  • Costume designer Natalie Pryce won the Costume Design Recognition Award at the 2020 Black British Theatre Awards.
  • Watch out for the immersive set and video design by Mikaela Liakata and Tal Yarden, which overlays text messages, scenery, and dreamscapes. When the parties are too loud to hear the actors, dialogue is projected onto the set.
