Think you know Sleeping Beauty? Think again! Discover more to the Sleeping Beauty fairytale in Hex at the National Theatre.
Hex the musical isn’t the first time creator Rufus Norris has adapted the Sleeping Beauty story. In 2002, Norris’s Sleeping Beauty premiered at the Young Vic, reworking the traditional fairytale for a 21st-century audience. Hex turns the Sleeping Beauty story on its head, but puts focus on the fairy instead of Princess Rose.
Deep in the woods, a lonely fairy wants to bless someone. When she is finally called upon to help a princess, dreams turn into nightmares. Was this a real blessing, or is it a curse? Follow the fairy on a hundred-year quest to make everything good again and happy ever after.

Hex spells usually cause troubles. Hexes are a specific kind of charm associated with dark magic. If you are hexed, then bad things are likely to happen in your life. At first, Hex seemed to be stuck in its own musical theatre hex — Hex London performances in 2021 were cancelled due to the pandemic. So now, after a year's slumber, the Sleeping Beauty musical finally opens in London.
Hex is the latest family-friendly musical at the National Theatre. In 2019, the Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear musical picked up an Olivier nomination for Best Family Show. Perhaps Hex will do the same?
