About A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra…)

“He said, ‘The day will come when they don’t cut our heads off in front of people.’ And I asked him, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because we’ll cut them off ourselves.’”

A lecturer in Chile. A study group in the USA. A guard in the desert. A hangman in Mexico. A woman who won’t stop dancing in Peru.

Pablo Manzi’s darkly comic odyssey across the Americas explores whether violence brings us closer together and what it takes to make a community.

Developed on a residency at the Royal Court, A Fight Against…marks the English language debut of one of Chile’s most significant new voices. Royal Court Associate (International) Sam Pritchard directs.

More information about A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra…)

In a world where we’re all craving our own personal space, what happens when people get too close? For some, they turn to violence in order to assert their dominance. In A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra), audiences can consider what violence means in today’s society, and whether it brings people together or drives us apart. Book A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra) tickets on TodayTix.

The A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra) play focuses on different types of people all living across the Americas. During the show, you’ll meet a Chilean lecturer, a Mexican hangman, desert guards and study groups. Separately, their lives couldn’t be further apart. Collectively, their lives have been impacted by violence.

Repercussions of violence can reverberate in a person's mind for years, decades, or a whole lifetime. When you’re confronted by attacks though, it’s hard to think about anything else. By the end of the play, you’ll be illuminated by how vicious aggression can be used in meaningful ways.

Sam Pritchard directs Pablo Manzi’s first English language play, premiering at the Royal Court. Book A Fight Against… (Una Lucha Contra) tickets on TodayTix now.
