Starlight Express originally opened in London at the Apollo Victoria in 1984, running for over 7,400 performances. The longest-running production of the musical, however, is in Germany, which has been running since 1988 at the purpose-built Starlighthalle, where it still runs today.
Director Luke Sheppard (&Juliet, The Little Big Things) leads the creative team for this new production, which features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. The creative team also includes set designer Tim Hatley, video designer Andrzej Goulding, costume designer Gabriella Slade, lighting designer Howard Hudson, sound designer Gareth Owen, and musical supervisor Matthew Brind.
-Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the few individuals to achieve EGOT status, meaning he's won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. He's received these awards for outstanding musical theatre and film contributions.
Starlight Express takes place in the vivid dreams of a nine-year-old boy, where his toy trains spring to life. From the speedy Pacific Daylight and Bobo of France to Espresso from Italy and the aged steam train Rusty, a diverse collection of trains from around the globe competes to claim the title of the fastest train in the world.
