Jack Thorne’s A Christmas Carol adaptation premiered at the Old Vic in 2017, starring Rhys Ifans as Ebenezer Scrooge. It’s since become a Christmas theatre institution, running at the Old Vic each holiday season. Over the years, actors including Paterson Joseph, Andrew Lincoln, Stephen Mangan, and Owen Teale have played Ebenezer Scrooge. This year, Doctor Who’s Christopher Eccleston leads the cast.
With a theatre transformed into the round and charming Christmas hymns, the A Christmas Carol play rejuvenates the Charles Dickens story. London Theatre raved about the 2021 production: “The music, beautifully arranged, saturates an evening that cuts to the soul, and to the essence of the theatrical, too.” You’ll want to make sure A Christmas Carol is part of your theatregoing plans.
Based on Charles Dickens's beloved work, the play follows Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve. As three ghosts visit Scrooge in one evening, can Scrooge reevaluate his outlook on life and find a new spirit by Christmas morning? The Old Vic is filled to the brim with mince pies, music, and plenty of merriment. God bless us everyone! Book A Christmas Carol tickets on TodayTix.

Jack Thorne’s treatment of this seasonal staple is moody, thoughtful, and heartfelt. Thorne is a master of bringing much-loved stories to life onstage, also working on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Thorne’s script, coupled with Matthew Warchus’s atmospheric direction, delivers the perfect blend of Dickensian mirth and Gothic darkness. Though the story is internationally known, this production breathes wintery life into the beloved masterpiece.
