Sarah Parish stars in the world premiere of a gripping post-World War Two play about life in a Cardiff community.
Diana Nneka Atouna’s Trouble in Butetown follows those who live in Butetown, a housing estate in Cardiff. Originally set up as a model housing estate by a wealthy aristocrat, multicultural settlers changed the day-to-day life in Butetown.
Fast forward to World War Two. Boarding house owner Gwyneth continues to welcome people in — but it’s an illegal boarding house. African American GI Nate escapes his barracks and ends up in the Welsh capital. Unfortunately, laws suspend African Americans from integrating with the locals. When trouble’s on the horizon, who can people trust?

Trouble in Butetown is Diana Nneka Atuona’s second play. Her debut play Liberian Girl saw her win the Alfred Fagon award for Best Black British Playwright. In her latest work, she’s bringing the Cardiff community to life. The “Tiger Bay” area became known as one of the UK’s first multicultural communities, welcoming settlers from over 50 countries.
Tinuke Craig directs the Trouble in Butetown play. She’s no stranger to helming stories based on Black people: she directed August Wilson’s Jitney at the Old Vic, and The Color Purple at Leicester Curve. Now, she’s bringing the story of Black people in 20th century Wales to life.
