It's hrilling whenever there’s a new production of this beloved Tony and Olivier Award-winning musical, but this show is even more special because of where it takes place. The beautiful outdoor Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre will undoubtedly give new life to this musical which centres on nature and the elements.
A Caribbean-inspired take on The Little Mermaid, this stunning, transportive musical uses Calypso rhythms and instruments to make you feel like you’re sitting in a tropical paradise. It tackles topics such as colonization and classism while celebrating Black joy.
Once on This Island is actually a story within a story, as village storytellers weave the legend of an island ruled by four gods: Asaka, Mother of the Earth; Agwé, god of Water; Erzulie, goddess of Love; and Papa Ge, demon of Death. The gods place a bet to see if love or death is stronger.
Ti Moune finds herself in the middle of the action. As she falls in love with Daniel, a boy from the other side of the island, Ti Moune must stay strong. What transpires is a story of passion, loss, and prejudice as Ti Moune proves against the odds stacked against her that love is more powerful than death.
