Daphne du Maurier’s book was a bestseller, with 2.8 million copies sold between its publication in 1938 and 1965. In addition to the musical adaptation, the novel has inspired a play and multiple film adaptations, including Alfred Hitchcock's 1940 Academy Award-winning movie of the same name. A more recent film adaptation premiered on Netflix in 2020, directed by Ben Wheatley.
In 2017, Daphne du Maurier’s novel was voted the UK’s favourite book of the past 225 years in a survey conducted by the bookseller W H Smith, beating out To Kill A Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Eyre.
Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze were also the composing team behind the most successful German-language musical of all time, Elisabeth. The musical has been translated into seven languages and seen by over ten million spectators but has not yet been staged in an English-language production.
One of the show's songs, "The Power of a Woman in Love," had an English version released as a single performed by Gloria Gaynor before the Viennese premiere took place.
