More information about The Crown Jewels

The Crown Jewels is a riotous, all-star comedy about the true story of one man and his mind-boggling plot to steal the nation’s most precious treasures. With a group of cunning conspirators, Colonel Blood finds himself in the infamous Tower of London, ready to lay his hands on the priceless crown, orb, and sceptre belonging to the party-loving King Charles II. But, uh-oh, this King of England cannot afford another royal scandal. Will the schemers achieve the unthinkable, or will the merry monarch have the last laugh?

With BAFTA award-winning creator of The Durrells and Men Behaving Badly, Simon Nye writing, and multi-Olivier Award winner Sean Foley directing, this hilarious heist comedy is jam-packed with quick quibs, riotous jokes - and even a song and dance!

The acclaimed cast, that include some of the best in the U.K comedy scene, add a small sprinkling of musical theatre to this regal reminisce comedy play. West End legend Carrie Hope Fletcher leads the musical aspect of this show, in her role as Lady of the Bedchamber.

What to watch for

  • This play really is based on true events! The character of Colonel Blood is based on an Irishman named Thomas Blood, who attempted to steal the Crown Jewels in 1671 after hatching a baffling plan.
  • Could you imagine a world without the theatre? Oliver Cromwell, the predecessor of the throne before Charles II, outlawed Christmas, dancing, and even the theatre - imagine that! After Charles came into power, he brought back these beloved celebrations, earning him the name the Merry Monarch.
  • The current Crown Jewels are stored in the Jewel House at the Tower of London, only a few miles from the Garrick Theatre. The crown is made of gold and set with 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls, and 4 rubies.
  • King Charles II was an impressive 6 foot 2 inches tall. Whilst that is still deemed tall today, back in the 17th century, the average height of a man was five foot five inches - so Charles stood high above the rest.
