Old Friends celebrates the life and work of legendary musical theatre composer Stephen Sondheim. Originally performed as a one-night-only gala performance in 2022, the overwhelmingly popular demand led to the show selling out within just a couple of hours. Experience this joyful tribute to Sondheim once more as the concert returns for only 16 weeks at the Gielgud Theatre.
Expect to hear songs from Sondheim’s most iconic shows, including Company and Sweeney Todd. Tony Award-winners Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga will lead the concert alongside a company of the West End’s top talents. Peters made her London stage debut in the original Old Friends gala evening last year, whilst Salonga will be returning to the West End for the first time in 27 years.
Old Friends is produced by Cameron Mackintosh and will be directed by Matthew Bourne and Julia McKenzie. The creative team includes choreographer Stephen Mear, musical supervisor Stephen Brooker, set designer Matt Kinley, projection designer George Reeve, costume designer Jill Parker, lighting designer Warren Letton, and sound designer Mick Potter, with musical arrangements by Stephen Metcalfe.

Stephen Sondheim was born in New York City in 1930 and mentored by the renowned lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who recognised his exceptional talent at a young age. Under Hammerstein’s guidance, Sondheim honed his craft and became one of history's most celebrated musical theatre composers.
Sondheim’s distinguished career saw him create eighteen musicals spanning across five decades. His work earned him eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Olivier Awards, and one Academy Award. His work on Sunday in the Park With George saw him awarded with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993.
What to watch for
- In 2019, the Queen's Theatre was renamed the Sondheim Theatre after a multimillion-pound restoration. Stephen Sondheim became the first living artist to have a theatre named in his honour on Shaftesbury Avenue.
- Bernadette Peters has been a frequent collaborator of Sondheim’s. Over the years, she has created roles in Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods and starring in productions of Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Follies.
- In Lin-Manuel Miranda's film Tick, Tick... Boom, actor Bradley Whitford portrays Sondheim. The actual voice of Sondheim makes a cameo appearance through a voice message he leaves for Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) towards the end of the movie.
