When Arthur Kipps is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, he has to visit Eel Marsh House. It’s an eerie residence where nobody lives anymore, but it can’t be haunted, right? Attending Alice’s funeral, Arthur learns of all the secrets typically hidden away from the world. To save himself and restore his mind, Arthur recruits an actor to share his stories and act out the ghosts of his past.

Even though it’s a slow-paced play, you’ll be gripped by the action. Watch Arthur Kipps creep around Eel Marsh House and try to rid himself of a terrifying curse by getting an actor to recount the frightening events. Stephen Mallatratt added the ‘play within a play’ element throughout The Woman In Black for the stage adaptation. It’s clearly attracted West End audiences, as The Woman In Black is the second longest running play in London, behind The Mousetrap.

- The Woman in Black famously uses the audience’s imagination to create the sets. Horses and carts, props and even pets are imagined. Once you’ve seen the show with friends, chat about what you saw… or what you think you saw.
- Nobody expected The Woman in Black to last so long! The play was first intended to run over a Christmas season as a way of using grant money given to the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. The play then transferred to the Fortune Theatre in 1989 and the rest is history.
- The Woman in Black celebrated its 13,000th performance at the Fortune Theatre in 2022.
