Kim’s Convenience tells the story of a Korean family-run convenience store. Throughout the story, the father grapples with a changing city and his desire for his daughter to take over running the grocery store. Through touching scenes, moments of laughter, and difficult conversations, the play explores the dynamics between a first-generation immigrant father and his second-generation immigrant children.
Kim’s Convenience in London is directed by Esther Jun, who was one of the actors in the 2011 premiere of the show.
As Jun told Theatre Weekly, “Kim’s is very near and dear to my heart and it means so much to me to be able to bring the whole story to life as a director. I think I am the first Korean Canadian to direct the show and while I had great directors when I acted in it, there is something special for me to be able to bring something so personal to the stage and I think audiences react to that.”
The creative team also includes set and costume designer Mona Camille (A View From the Bridge), lighting designer Jonathan Chan (Move Fast and Break Things), and sound designer and composer Adrienne Quartly (The Tragedy of Thomas Hobbes).
