About Opening Night

Opening Night is based on the 1971 John Cassavetes film, following the intense preparations of a theatre company gearing up for a significant Broadway production. However, behind the scenes, tension erupts when the leading lady confronts a personal tragedy, compelling the entire cast to deliver the performance of their lives amidst the unfolding drama.

Rising to prominence for her versatile talent, Smith has graced the stage and screen with her remarkable performances. Her breakthrough came with the sitcom Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, where she showcased her comedic prowess. Smith's theatrical achievements include a Laurence Olivier Award for her role in the musical Legally Blonde. She garnered critical acclaim for the drama series Mrs Biggs and the biographical drama Cilla. Most recently, she starred in Shirley Valentine at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

More information about Opening Night

Ivo van Hove is a highly regarded Belgian theatre and opera director. Notable credits include a West End production of A View from the Bridge in 2015, which won the Olivier Award for Best Revival. More recently, he helmed the stage adaptations of All About Eve and A Little Life.

The new musical will also have a book by Hove paired with music and lyrics by Rufus Wainwright. The creative team also includes set, lighting and video designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D'Huys, sound designers Tom Gibbons and Alex Twiselton, musical director Nigel Lilley, and choreographer Polly Bennett.
