Hello, Dolly! is based on John Oxenford's 1935 play A Day Well Spent. This story has had various other adaptations, including an 1842 German musical and Thornton Wilder's farcical play The Merchant of Yonkers. After initial challenges, Wilder's revised version, titled The Matchmaker, became a Broadway hit.
The musical, written by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart, underwent several title changes before settling on Hello, Dolly! During its original Broadway run, it achieved remarkable success, running for 2,844 performances and winning a then record-breaking 10 Tony Awards. Herman and Stewart’s timeless score includes “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”, “Ribbons Down My Back”, “Before the Parade Passes By”, “Elegance”, “It Only Takes a Moment” and, of course, “Hello, Dolly!”.
