Antony and Cleopatra is a play by William Shakespeare. The story is based on the 1579 English translation of Plutarch's Parallel Lives. The King's Men first performed the play around 1607 at either the Globe Theatre or Blackfriars Theatre.
The play has been a theatre hit throughout the centuries, including many notable performances from theatre greats, such as the 1951 production starring Laurence Olivier as Antony and Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra. In 1987, Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench starred in the play at the Royal National Theatre, and Dench earned an Olivier Award for her role as Cleopatra.
As with many of Shakespeare's plays, Antony and Cleopatra has inspired numerous other creative works. Many television and film adaptations have been made, including the first, released in 1908, starring Maurice Costello and Florence Lawrence. The 1963 film Cleopatra, based on the play, starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor and earned three Academy Awards.
