Richard III in London has a talented cast, including Marianne Oldham (Holby City) in the role of Elizabeth, Helen Schlesinger (Straight Line Crazy) in the role of Buckingham, Sarah Finigan (Suffragette) playing both King Edward and Mayor, and Kibong Tanji (Tina—The Tina Turner Musical) playing Clarence and Stanley.

The cast brings to life the story of Richard of Gloucester, whose dream is to be the King of England. The charismatic and narcissistic Richard stops at nothing in pursuit of his goal as he manipulates, deceives, and murders those around him.

Richard III is a play with a stellar creative team behind it, including director Elle While, an associate artist at Shakespeare's Globe. E.M. Parry, part of the team on Rotterdam that earned an Olivier for Outstanding Achievement, is the designer.

Richard III was written around 1592 and was the longest English stage play until Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. The play has a rich history of performances, starting with the earliest certain performance, in 1633 when Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria watched on the Queen's birthday.

Since then, Richard III has had numerous revivals on stages throughout the world, including Laurence Olivier's 1944 performance as Richard. In 1955, Olivier directed, produced, and starred in the Golden Globe-winning film Richard III. In the 2014 Broadway revival, Mark Rylance was nominated for a Tony Award for playing Richard.

The play has also inspired many other creative works, including the 2017 musical drama film Bloody Richard, the miniseries The White Queen, and the television show The Hollow Crown.

What to watch for

  • Shakespeare drew much inspiration for the play from Sir Thomas More's unfinished History of King Richard III.
  • In the 2010 film The King's Speech, when the speech therapist auditions for his role, he quotes Richard III, saying, "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York."
  • Richard III has an impressive 52 named characters, more than any other Shakespeare play.
  • One of the lines from the play, "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" has been seen in other forms of media, including the 1993 Mel Brooks film Robin Hood: Men in Tights and the 1949 Looney Tunes cartoon A Ham in a Role.
