About The Taming of the Shrew - Globe

This summer, be transported to Renaissance Italy through Shakespeare's fan-favorite classic comedy The Taming of the Shrew at the Globe. Book The Taming of the Shrew tickets on TodayTix.

See the talented cast take the stage, including Andrew Leung (Barbie) as Petruchio, Thalissa Teixeira (We Met Before) as Katherina/the Shrew, Sophie Mercell (EastEnders) as Bianca, and Yasmin Taheri (The Long Shadow) as Lucentio.

The Taming of the Shrew in London tells a centuries-old provocative tale of love and humor when Lucentio falls for Bianca. Before he can court her, Bianca's older sister, Katherina, must be married. However, Katherina stubbornly doesn’t want to marry, so as the play goes on, Petruchio "tames" her.

The play has a skilled creative team, including director Jude Christian (Titus Andronicus). Jackie Orton, who was the deputy head of costume at the Royal Court theatre for 12 years, is the costume supervisor, and the fight and intimacy director is Haruka Kuroda (Sherwood, Romeo & Juliet).

More information about The Taming of the Shrew - Globe

It is hard to pinpoint exactly when The Taming of the Shrew was written in part due to the plot similarities between A Pleasant Conceited Historie, called the taming of a Shrew, an Elizabethan play. According to Philip Henslowe's journal, the earliest known performance of The Taming of the Shrew took place on 11 June 1594 at Newington Butts Theatre by the Lord Admiral's Men and the Lord Chamberlain's Men.

Since then, the play has been performed countless times around the world, including the 1978 New York Shakespeare Festival revival starring Meryl Streep and Raul Julia and the 2003 Shakepheare's Globe revival starring Janet McTeer as part of the all-female cast.

What to watch for

  • Shakespeare drew inspiration for The Taming of the Shrew from numerous sources, including folk tales and songs that were popular when the play was written. There was also much debate during this era regarding women and their duties in marriage, which likely also influenced the themes in this play.
  • The Taming of the Shrew uses a framing device called an induction; the play opens as a nobleman tricks a drunk man into thinking he is a nobleman and then has the play performed for him.
  • The 1999 high school comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, is based on The Taming of the Shrew.
  • The 1953 opera, The Taming of the Shrew, by Vittorio Giannini, was a successful adaptation of the play. In 1954, a 90-minute shortened version of the opera starring John Raitt and Susan Yager was filmed by the NBC Opera Theater for television.
