What to watch for

  • One of the most popular adaptations of Romeo and Juliet is West Side Story, the 1957 musical by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. They set the story in New York City and instead of feuding families, the show features clashing street gangs.
  • The story of Romeo and Juliet was based on The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet, a book by Arthur Brooke written in 1562.
  • In March 1662 Mary Saunderson was the first woman to play Juliet professionally. From there, Juliet became a coveted role, and in the mid-19th century, women were allowed to play both Juliet and Romeo. The most successful female Romeo during this time was Charlotte Cushman.
  • Throughout history, the roles of Romeo and Juliet have been highly desired. Actors such as Leslie Howard, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Orlando Bloom have played Romeo.
  • Freema Agyeman isn’t the only cast member to be a part of Doctor Who. Ray Sesay, who plays Tybalt, was in one episode of the hit series in 2018, and Tomiwa Edun, who plays Capulet, was in an episode in 2016.
