About Macbeth

See Doctor Who star David Tennant and The Good Wife star Cush Jumbo reprise their roles in Shakespear’s psychological thriller, Macbeth, following a sell-out run at Donmar Warehouse. Book Macbeth tickets on TodayTix.

Macbeth in London tells the classic Shakespearean tale of Macbeth, the Scottish general who will stop at no act of violence to become king. The play explores the physical and psychological effects of seeking political power as Macbeth becomes a tyrannical leader.

Following its 2023-2024 Donmar Warehouse run, Macbeth comes to Harold Pinter Theatre with the same talented company, including Rona Morison (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) as Lady Macduff, Noof Ousellam (Andor) as Macduff, and Cal Macaninch (Mr. Selfridge) as Banquo.

The sound design by Gareth Fry elevates this performance as audiences embark on an immersive experience with headphones that are provided for the show. Through these headphones, audiences will hear the sound effects such as bird screeches and even the disembodied voices of the three sisters. The live Celtic music throughout the show also adds flair to the performance.

Please note: The production is not able to guarantee the appearance of any specific actor due to illness or unforeseen circumstances

More information about Macbeth

Macbeth is a play with centuries of history. The earliest known performance of the play was in 1606 for King James. Since then, there have been numerous revivals worldwide. One such revival is the 1976 Royal Shakespeare Company production starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench; another is the 1936 adaptation by Orson Welles called 'Voodoo Macbeth.'

Like other Shakespearean works, Macbeth has also inspired works of film, television, opera, radio, and books. One film is Throne of Blood, a 1957 film that sets the classic tale in Japan. Another is Geoffrey Wright's Macbeth; this 2001 film modernized the story and was an animated take on the popular psychological thriller.

It's not just films that the play has inspired. In 1847, Giuseppe Verdi adapted the play into an opera, his first opera based on a Shakespearean play. In 2011, the play inspired a novel by A.J. Hartley and David Hewson titled Macbeth: A Novel.

What to watch for

  • Macbeth is based in part on Raphael Holinshed's 1587 book Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
  • The play wasn't published until 1623, seven years after Shakespeare's death. It was published by actor friends John Herminge and Henry Condell as part of his First Folio, which contained 36 plays.
  • The three sisters were also known as the weird sisters. However, weird had a different meaning in Shakespeare's day as it referred to their future-predicting ability.
  • There is a lot of superstition surrounding Macbeth. Legend has it that witches objected to the play from the beginning and cursed it, and since then, there have been various accidents and disasters surrounding the play.
