About Twelfth Night

Be transported to a seaside moonlit cafe in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night or What You Will, the first show of Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's summer season. Book Twelfth Night tickets on TodayTix.

See Evelyn Miller (Cyrano de Bergerac, Patriots) star as Viola alongside Andro Cowperthwaite (Dorian, Dead Hot) as her twin, Sebastian. The talented cast also includes Anna Francolini (Strictly Ballroom, Sex Education) as Olivia, Raphael Bushay (National Theatre Live: The Crucible, Oklahoma!) as Orsino, and Richard Cant (Mary Queen of Scots, It's A Sin) as Malvolio.

Twelfth Night in London is a classic Shakespearean comedy of mistaken identity, love, and, of course, a happy ending. When twins Viola and Sebastian are in a shipwreck, and Sebastian is presumed lost, Viola disguises herself as a man and takes on the name Cesario to serve Duke Orsino. The play moves through twists and turns as declarations of love are made, and a love triangle becomes apparent.

More information about Twelfth Night

Twelfth Night boasts a skilled creative team including musical supervisor Sam Kenyon, who has written additional songs for the show. Owen Horsley (Henry VI: Rebellion, Wars of the Roses, Royal Shakespeare Company) is the director, set design is by Basia Binkowska (Watch on the Rhine, Crooked Dances), and lighting design is by Aideen Malone (Death of a Salesman, Hamlet).

Twelfth Night is a play that was likely commissioned as part of the Twelfth Night celebrations by Queen Elizabeth I in 1601. Since then, the comedy has been performed worldwide, earning numerous awards along the way. The longest-running Broadway production of the play ran for 129 performances in 1940, starring Maurice Evans and Helen Hayes. The 2003 London revival won three Olivier Awards, and the 2014 Broadway revival earned two Tony Awards.

Additionally, the show has inspired numerous other creative works, such as the 1997 jukebox musical Play On! and the 1976 musical Music Is. Twelfth Night has also been the subject of radio programs; in 1923, Twelfth Night was the first full Shakespearean play ever broadcast on British radio.

What to watch for

  • It is believed that Shakespeare drew much inspiration for the play from the Italian comedy of intrigue Gl'ingannati by Accademia degli Intronati.
  • A popular film adaptation of Twelfth Night is the romantic comedy She's the Man, which came out in 2006. The film changes the setting to focus on a soccer rivalry and incorporates the names of many of the play's main characters.
  • A revival by the Royal National Theatre in 2017 changed some of the characters from male to female, including Fabian, who became Fabia, and Malvolio, who became Malvolia. This allowed the play to further explore sexuality and gender.
  • Twelfth Night has seen numerous film adaptations. The first was a short silent film by Vitagraph Studios in 1910.
