About Giant

Don’t miss Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe-winner John Lithgow (Sweet Smell of Success, The Crown, Killers of the Flower Moon) and Olivier Award winner Elliot Levey (Cabaret), starring in the world premiere of Mark Rosenblatt’s debut play, Giant. Book Giant tickets on TodayTix.

Both stars have received Olivier Award nominations for their roles in this story about world-famous children’s author, Roald Dahl, and the scandal surrounding an antisemitic article he wrote. Rachael Stirling (The Priory, An Ideal Husband) and Richard Hope (The Woman in Black, Hijack) also reprise their roles from the Royal Court run, with further casting to be announced.

The play, based on a true story, takes place throughout a single afternoon in 1983 shortly before Dahl’s book, The Witches, is released. Dahl must choose if he will apologise or risk his career forever.

More information about Giant

Giant in London has a talented creative team at its helm including Tony and Olivier-winning director Nicholas Hytner (Carousel, The History Boys), lighting designer Anna Watson (That is Not Who I Am, Imposter 22), Tony and Olivier-winning theatre designer Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins, An American in Paris), and sound designer Alexandra Faye Braithwaite (Bloody Elle, How Not to Drown).

This play is the first by Mark Rosenblatt. However, he is no stranger to theatre as he’s been a director for years, including his time as the associate director at Leeds Playhouse from 2013-16. He also wrote and directed the short film, Ganef, inspired by his family’s Holocaust survival story. The film won multiple awards and was selected for numerous film festivals.

What to watch for

  • Giant is a play that was originally commissioned for the Bridge Theatre. However, they could not stage the show because of Guys and Dolls, so the show was moved to the Royal Court to be a part of David Byrne's first year as the artistic director.
  • Roald Dahl has recently been in the news when, in 2023, many words in his books were altered or removed from upcoming printings to take out negative references to gender, skin colour, disabilities, and the like.
  • Some of Roald Dahl's stories have been turned into plays and musicals, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. However, this is the first play centred on the scandal surrounding his personal life.
  • Romola Garai, who starred in the Royal Court run, has been Olivier-nominated for her role in the play. She has also been nominated for her role in The Years, meaning she is up for two Olivier Awards in the same category in 2025.
