Boys from the Blackstuff is a play that has a talented cast, including Nathan McMullen (Misfits) as Chrissie, Aron Julius (Death on the Nile) as Loggo, Philip Whitchurch (Billy Elliot, A View From the Bridge) as George, Mark Womack (The Responder) as Dixie, and Barry Sloane (Revenge) as Yosser. Writer James Graham told BBC, "Sometimes in Boys From the Blackstuff people had no jobs, and in the modern age sometimes people have three jobs - but they are still living with the economic pressures and the in-work poverty that these characters had, and the lack of hope."
• In the television series, the character Yosser Hughes' children were played by writer Alan Bleasedale's children.
• Video imagery in the background of some of the scenes in the play, including one scene with waves, helps to bring the performance to life and heighten many moments in the show.
• The television series was first aired three years after Margaret Thatcher became prime minister. While most of the scripts were written before she came into power, the work has been considered a great portrayal of how her policies affected working-class people, especially in northern cities.
