About Death of England: Delroy

See Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London, The Lazarus Project) star in Death of England: Delroy, the second play in the Death of England trilogy. Book Death of England: Delroy tickets on TodayTix.

The impactful play by Clint Dyer and Roy Williams is a tale of identity and belonging. Delroy, a former bailiff turned unemployed alcoholic, is forced to confront the reality of racial profiling and his inability to stay apolitical when he is arrested the day his girlfriend goes into labour.

This monologue play provides an opportunity for Essiedu’s talents to be on full display as he takes the audience along on an intense journey through cheeky moments as well as moments of anger and frustration.

Death of England: Delroy in London can be watched on its own or alongside the other two shows in the series because, for the first time, all three Death of England plays are being staged in the West End during the same season.

More information about Death of England: Delroy

Death of England: Delroy is a play that began previews on 21 October 2020, when theatre first started to come back after the COVID-19 lockdowns. However, the play's run was cut short due to ongoing lockdowns; it closed on 4 November 2020, the production's opening night. Even with these challenges the play was a success with critics and audiences alike.

As a review from Variety said, "Most shows shuttering on their opening night sink mercifully without trace, but "Death of England: Delroy" will, without a doubt, rise again."

The Death of England trilogy boasts an exceptional creative team including Clint Dyer (Othello, Sylvia Plath) as the director, Jackie Shemesh (The Seagull) as the lighting designer, Benjamin Grant (Machinal) and Tony Award-winning Pete Malkin (The Encounter) as co-sound designers, Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey (Tambo and Bones) and Olivier Award-winning ULTZ (Jerusalem) as co-set and costume designers.

What to watch for

  • This play was inspired by Dim Sum, a 10-minute film by Clint Dyer that Headlong and the Guardian commissioned.
  • The Death of England series has been called a “state of the nation” project exploring topics from Brexit to Black Lives Matter, COVID-19, and more.
  • Much of Death of England: Delroy was written through Zoom, Facetime, and phone calls as it was written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Death of England trilogy is interconnected; this play is tied to the others because Delroy is friends with Michael from the first play in the series.
