See Jasper Britton (Habeas Corpus), Tiffany Gray (Between Riverside and Crazy), Emma Kingston (In The Heights), Richard Pepple (High Life), and Sule Rimi (Blues for an Alabama Sky) at the Kiln Theatre stage.
Together, the talented cast tells the story of the unlikely friendship forged between an older Broadway telesales director, a DJ, and a former rapper who spend time together on their building stoop in Queens. When an impromptu rap battle breaks out between two young women, it’s soon clear that it goes far beyond a spar over hip-hop as they are forced to confront their beliefs and experiences about race, sexuality, and more.
As Emma Kingston said, “I think it’s five people from all different walks of life who come together to have a conversation. They are confronted with ideas and opinions that are different to their own and it’s how they react and talk about it. I think any audience can resonate with a group of people discussing differences of opinion.”

The Purists is a play by playwright Dan McCabe (Blame The Parents) that premiered in 2019 at Huntington Theatre in Boston, where it was a hit with audiences and critics. This European premiere is directed by Amit Sharma, who is in his first season as the artistic director at Kiln Theatre.
Sharma said of this season at Kiln Theatre, “At the heart of the theatre programme are human stories which are fun, poignant, relatable, and make for a great night out! Pins and Needles, The Purists, The Lonely Londoners, and Shanghai Dolls are brilliant plays written by incredible playwrights. The common thread they all have is that they tackle the big conversations which explore our cultural and political life – past and present."
The Purists in London has an excellent creative team, including lighting designer Oliver Fenwick (Ulster American), set designer Tom Piper (Hamnet), sound designer Tony Gayle (Next To Normal), and costume designer Ruth Badila (1984).
