About The Turn of the Screw

Head to the English National Opera to see Benjamin Britten’s gothic horror drama, The Turn of the Screw. Book The Turn of the Screw tickets on TodayTix.

Don’t miss the talented cast, including Ailish Tynan (Handel’s Radamisto) as the Governess, Gweneth Ann Rand (It’s a Wonderful Life) as Mrs. Grose, Eleanor Dennis (Gloriana) as Miss Jessel, Alan Oke (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Prologue, and Robert Murray (Mozart Mitridate, re di Ponto) as Peter Quint. The young performers in the roles of Flora and Miles are Victoria Nekhaenko, Holly Hylton, Jerry Louth, and Nicolai Flutter.

Through flashbacks from a psychiatric ward, the expert cast tells the tale of a young governess sent to a remote English manor to care for two orphaned children. However, things aren’t as they seem, and the line between reality and fiction is blurred as the grounds and the children themselves appear to be haunted. Anxiety and tensions rise throughout the show, and paired with Britten’s use of nursery rhymes the eeriness of the drama is heightened.

More information about The Turn of the Screw

The Turn of the Screw in London has an expert creative team, including director and designer Isabella Bywater, who earned a Golden Softi Award for Best Opera Production in 2011 for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Bywater said of this opera, “The Turn of the Screw, beautifully written by Benjamin Britten and Myfanwy Piper, is a fascinating project. This psychological thriller is wonderfully observed and disturbing. The challenge is to tell the story, aghost story, taking into account the possible unreliability of the witness, the governess, never named. Ambiguity is what makes it so unsettling.”

The exceptional creative team also includes conductors Duncan Ward and Charlotte Corderoy, who are both making their English National Opera debut. Paul Anderson (The Baker’s Wife) is the lighting designer, Jon Driscoll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland) is the projection designer, and Myfanwy Piper is the librettist.
