More information about The Seagull

The Seagull in London was adapted by Duncan Macmillan (People, Places and Things) and Thomas Ostermeier (An Enemy of the People), and Ostermeier is also the show's director. The creative team also includes sound designer Tom Gibbons, set designer Magda Willi, and costume designer Marg Horwell.

As Ostermeier said in a statement, "I have known and admired Cate for many years, and to see her on stage is always a privilege. I am thrilled that we will make our first artistic collaboration with this production of The Seagull at the Barbican, and that London will experience this once in a generation actress in one of the greatest theatrical roles of Arkadina. I'm also very pleased to be forging a new artistic relationship with Tom Burke, who will play the role of Trigorin."

The Seagull is a play that was written in 1895 and was first produced in 1896. Since then, it has been staged numerous times, including Tom Stoppard's translation, which premiered at the Old Vic in 1997. The 1992 Broadway staging starred Tyne Daly, Ethan Hawke, Jon Voight, and Laura Linney and the 2007 staging at the Royal Court Theatre starred Kristin Scott Thomas, Mackenzie Crook, and Carey Mulligan.

What to watch for

  • This play reunited Blanchett and Burke, who recently worked together on Steven Soderbergh's thriller film, Black Bag.
  • Thomas Ostermeier and producer, Wessex Grove, are reunited in The Seagull. Earlier in 2024, they worked together on An Enemy of the People.
  • In 2015 The Seagull was adapted into a musical called Songbird which was recognized as a New York Times Critic's Pick.
  • In 1896, the first staging of The Seagull didn't go well. The audience booed the show, and one of the best actors in Russia, Vera Komissarzhevskaya, lost her voice due to intimidation. However, after its disastrous opening night, it's become an audience and critic favourite.
