The talented cast tells the story of 19-year-old Pip who is seeking to find themselves through gardening. One day in the attic they discover a dust-covered jacket with a diary in the pocket written by someone long gone. Pip makes it their mission to uncover the truth about the person who wrote the diary. This heartwarming and funny play explores grief and how it’s expressed, and how one family reconciles the past and plants seeds of a better future.

Lavender, Hyacinth, Violet, Yew is a play by Coral Wylie who also stars in the production. Their writing focuses on the natural world, blending stories with bugs, dirt, and more. Wylie is an alumni of Bush Emerging Writers’ Group; their 2022 show ANTHEM was played on the Bush Theatre main stage. Additionally, Lavender, Hyacinth, Violet, Yew was shortlisted for The Alfred Fagon Award in 2023.
Wylie said, “I wrote this play for a society that doesn’t let us grieve how we need to, that keeps us closed and locked up, for the generation we still ache for the loss of, and for the generation that is trying with all their might to know those lives cut short.”
Lavender, Hyacinth, Violet, Yew in London has an excellent creative team, including direction by Debbie Hannan (Overflow), casting direction by Jatinder Chera (The P Word), lighting design by Laura Howard (The Kola Nut Does Not Speak English), and the Company Stage Manager is Rebecca Natalini (The Real Ones).

- Coral Wylie’s first full-length script, ENTOMOLOGY, was longlisted for the Tony Craze Award in 2022.
- Wylie draws inspiration from the writing of Tyrell Williams. Wylie said, “His writing is a constant source of inspiration for me in letting the branches flourish overhead, whilst constantly holding tight to stories at their root.”
- Pooky Quesnel was nominated for the Best Actress award at the British Soap Awards in 2002 for her role in Family Affairs.
- Director Debbie Hannan is also a writer. They were commissioned by Cardboard Citizens for the More Than One Story project, and Cardboard Citizens produced their award-winning short Snakes and Landlords.
