About Speed

Don't miss the world premiere of Speed, a brand new play that reunites writer Mohamed-Zain Dada and director Milli Bhatia following their Olivier-Award-nominated collaboration on Blue Mist. Book Speed tickets on TodayTix.

See the talented cast of Sabrina Sandhu (Everybody's Talking About Jamie, BBC's The Syndicate), Arian Nik (Blue Mist, BBC's Daddy Issues), Nikesh Patel (Amazon's The Devil's Hour, BBC/HBO's Starstruck), and Shazia Nicholls (The Merry Wives of Windsor, Paradise Now!) on the Bush Theatre stage.

Together, the cast tells the tale of a seemingly typical speed awareness course put on by the nationally known speed educator Abz. Set in an unassuming Birmingham basement, a nurse, delivery driver, and entrepreneur join the class, which quickly becomes more like a therapy session as anger, secrets, and vulnerabilities are exposed.

More information about Speed

Speed in London is directed by Milli Bhatia—the two-time Olivier Award nominee for Blue Mist and seven methods of killing kylie jenner.

In Running The Room: Conversations With Women Theatre Directors by Rosemary Waugh, Bhatia said of her creative process, "I approach the process of directing a play by asking similar questions to those one might when organising political action, and I came to both directing and political organising around the same time in my late teens. 'Why this and why now?'; 'Who is it for?'; 'Who is the audience?'; 'How do we consider spectacle and theatricality?'; 'Who will it speak to?' and 'Who do we want to empower within the process of creating and staging this event?' are some examples. I consider how I can be clear and precise about what my work wants to do, and how I can practice resistance, responsibility and solidarity in the process."

Speed is a play that has an excellent creative team which includes costume supervisor Beth Qualter Buncall (Kim's Convenience), lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun (My Neighbour Totoro), fight director Bret Yount (Oliver!), set and costume designer Tomás Palmer (Blue Mist), and designer XANA (Imposter 22).

What to watch for

  • In addition to Mohamed-Zain Dada and Milli Bhatia collaborating on Blue Mist, Arian Nik and Tomás Palmer were both part of the production as well.
  • Mohamed-Zain Dada's first play was Blue Mist, and it earned him an Olivier Award nomination. He said, "While working at the Bush Theatre, I developed an interest in theatre, particularly new writing. The Artistic Director encouraged me to explore further. Everything started after I enrolled on an 'Introduction to Playwriting' course. After the course I submitted a full play and then things started happening, exceeding my initial expectations."
  • Sabrina Sandhu earned the Best Debut Performance award at the BBC Audio Drama Awards for the BBC Radio 4 drama Black Eyed Girls.
  • Charles Holloway OBE has supported this production. He said, "I get excited about projects and productions that engage young people and families, and people who aren't overly familiar with theatre, and shows them a story and a space they can enjoy."
