About The Last Laugh

Don’t miss The Last Laugh at the Noël Coward Theatre following its sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Book The Last Laugh tickets on TodayTix.

Reprising their roles from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, see Bob Golding (Morecambe, Elvis the Musical) as Morecambe, Simon Cartwright (Howerd’s End, Toast of London) as Monkhouse, and Damian Williams (Being Tommy Cooper, Hairspray) as Cooper.

This laugh-out-loud funny play expertly balances nostalgic and moving scenes with comedic moments. The show imagines if beloved British comedians Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe, and Bob Monkhouse met in a dressing room before a show. With each having a distinctly different comic style--what would they talk about? How would they be similar? How would they be different?

“The underlying pathos is beautifully brought to the surface, with clever writing by Paul Hendy, who also directs. The play between the actors is both charming and endearing, and encapsulates every character trait and career highlight of this trio of stars,” said the five-star Entertainment Now review of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe staging.

More information about The Last Laugh

The Last Laugh is a play by Paul Hendy, who is also the show's director. The story of The Last Laugh began almost a decade ago, in 2016, beginning as a short film that Hendy produced. The film was a success, earning multiple awards, including Best UK Film and Best UK Short at the Manchester Film Festival and Best Comedy Drama at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.

The Last Laugh in London has an excellent creative team which includes set designer Lee Newby (Labour of Love), music and soundscape designer Ethan Lewis Maltby (Hamlet), sound designer Callum Wills (Hairspray), and costume designer Amy Chamberlain (Snow White).

Jamie Wilson, the play's producer, said, "What is so brilliant about this play is that the audiences who love and remember Eric, Tommy, and Bob will be able to relive their comedy greatness, and those who don't will be introduced to the genius of these national treasures. I'm so pleased these icons will be back on the London stage for audiences to enjoy."

What to watch for

  • This isn’t the first time Bob Golding has played Eric Morecambe; in 2009, he starred in the one-man-play Morecambe.
  • The 4-star Edinburgh Theatre review said of the show, “The combination of serious and funny in Hendy’s script is about right, and it is probably at its best when the three of them are riffing off each other, discussing the nature of comedy and comedians.”
  • Damian Williams has previously played the role of Tommy Cooper in Being Tommy Cooper.
  • Paul Hendy directed and produced the short film, The Choice, which has won seven awards, including Best Director at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.
