About The Years

Don’t miss Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s powerful book, The Years, brought to life on the Harold Pinter Theatre stage following its sell-out run at Almeida Theatre. Book The Years tickets on TodayTix.

The Years is a play that spans generations. It showcases the story of womanhood through mundane, funny, and heart-wrenching moments as well as through the larger lens of history, from air raid sirens to the invention of contraceptive pills, Vietnam, and more. The play paints a portrait of a woman and how she’s shaped by the ever-changing world around her.

See the excellent cast of Golden Globe Award-nominated actress Romola Garai (The Hour), Olivier-winning actress Deborah Findlay (BBC’s The Split), Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet), BAFTA award-winning actress Gina McKee (Dear England), and Anjli Mohindra (Noises Off), who are reprising their Almeida Theatre roles. Each woman plays a different version of the main character whose story spans generations in this one-hour and 55-minute show.

Eline Arbo, the artistic director of International Theatre Amsterdam, is also the show’s director. The exceptional creative team also includes set designer Juul Dekker, costume designer Rebekka Wörmann, and lighting designer Varja Klosse.

The play first premiered in Dutch in 2022 at The Hague, and in the summer of 2024, it had its English premiere at Almeida Theatre. The Almeida Theatre production was a hit with audiences and critics. One of the many five-star reviews the show received was from The Guardian, which said, “There is so much emotional depth, surprise and theatrical virtuosity here that it holds you rapt across the ages. What an accomplishment.”

What to watch for

  • During a preview performance, the show had to pause because some audience members felt faint during the abortion scene.
  • A five-star review from the Independent said, “Ultimately, it is the emotional experience of seeing an entire existence lived on stage; a fairly unremarkable life made utterly remarkable.”
  • In 2022, author Annie Ernaux earned the Nobel Prize in Literature. As the Nobel Prize press release said, “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.”
  • An aspect of the play is the recreation of various photos of Annie throughout her life.
