About Here We Are

For the last time ever, audiences get to experience the magic of a brand new Stephen Sondheim musical with his posthumously produced show, Here We Are. Book Here We Are tickets on TodayTix.

Don't miss the UK premiere of this surrealist musical, which has a star-studded cast including Tony winners Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Take Me Out), Jane Krakowski (She Loves Me), and Paulo Szot (& Juliet).

This absurd musical tells the story of the wealthy couple Leo and Marianne Brink. They take their equally wealthy friends out for a high-end meal. However, it quickly becomes clear this isn't your typical meal. Act One is based on Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel's 1972 film, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, which tells of a group of friends who continually fail to eat at a dinner party. Act Two is based on another Buñuel project, this one the 1962 film, The Exterminating Angel, in which the friends are unable to leave the dinner.

What to watch for

  • Stephen Sondheim worked on this musical for almost a decade, leading up to his death in 2021.
  • Here We Are has an exceptional set design that sets the tone for the piece—beginning with the clean white surfaces of Act One and the more adorned embellishments in the room during Act Two.
  • The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, which inspired Act One, won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1973.
  • The Vulture review drew parallels between Here We Are and Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, saying, “The same seething consciousness of caste and cruelty that ripples through Sweeney forms the backbone of Here We Are.”
