Prison warden Matron “Mama” Morton agrees to help Roxie and hooks her up with hot-shot lawyer Billy Flynn. Billy sets out to manipulate the tabloids, making a celebrity of Roxie in an attempt to convince the jury of her innocence. Billy’s other client, Velma Kelly, is trying to steal the limelight, pulling out all stops to win her case so that she can resume her showbiz lifestyle. An unlikely friendship forms between the two cellmates, who soon realise that fame can’t get them everything.
First performed in New York in 1975, the London revival of this smash-hit show features Kander and Ebb’s much-loved score and Ann Reinking’s Fosse-style choreography. With an impressive band playing live on stage and a whole number of iconic songs including “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango,” you don’t want to miss this classic Broadway musical’s return to London.
The musical is based on a real murder case in 1924, covered by Maurine Dallas Watkins during her time as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune.
The popular film adaptation of the musical was produced in 2002, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma and Renée Zellweger as Roxie. The film won multiple awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture.
As well as six Tony Awards, the show has won a Grammy Award for the original cast recording and numerous international awards in Mexico, Australia and Brazil.
The production has played in 34 countries and has been performed in at least 11 languages.
The 1996 Broadway revival of the show is the second longest-running musical in Broadway history behind “The Phantom of the Opera.”
