Shakespeare comes with a twist in this musical adaptation of “Twelfth Night.” The story follows Viola, who, after she is separated from her twin brother in a shipwreck, disguises herself as a young man. She becomes a servant to the Duke Orsino, and her first task is to woo the Countess Olivia on his behalf. However, when Olivia ends up falling in love with Viola in boy’s clothes, confusion, comedy, and chaos ensues.
Young Vic Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah and The Public Theater’s Oskar Eustis co-direct this classic tale of romance and disguise, set in London's Notting Hill. This contemporary musical adaptation has been praised by the New York Times as “free-spirited, thoroughly delightful with a buoyant jazz-and-R&B-inflected score.” The musical adaptation features a score by Shaina Taub, and the cast includes a community chorus of local people from the Southwark and Lambeth areas. Kwei-Armah says it is a “show that stands community members shoulder to shoulder with professional artists...it’s a celebration.” This fast-paced romantic comedy, filled with mistaken identities and practical jokes, is an unconventional, big-hearted interpretation of Shakespeare's classic story.
The production features 60 members of a community chorus, with two teams of 30 alternating shows.
This production of “Twelfth Night” was originally performed at The Public Theater in New York as part of their Public Works program in 2016, and revived in summer 2018 as part of their free Shakespeare in the Park Delacorte season.
After 18 years, David Lan hands over the reigns to Kwame Kwei-Armah as the new Artistic Director of the Young Vic. “Twelfth Night” marks the first main house production in his inaugural season.
