More information about Jesus Hopped The 'A' Train

After shooting the leader of a religious organisation, Angel Cruz is being held in Rikers Island prison in New York awaiting trial. Despite insisting that he hasn’t done anything wrong, the young Puerto Rican bike messenger meets his match during the hour he spends every day in the jail yard. In the adjacent cell is Lucius Jenkins, a serial killer trying to avoid being sent to Florida where he would inevitably face the death penalty. To hide from his fears, Lucius distracts himself with intense physical workouts and the comforts of religion. The conversations between the two men forms the heart of the play, with Lucius reaching out and attempting to indoctrinate his neighbour, who lost his belief in God long ago.

Award-winning American playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis (“The Motherf**ker With The Hat”) questions whether redemption is ever possible when you’ve committed murderous acts. This funny, powerful, adrenaline-fuelled, dark comedy about justice and faith offers a stark reflection on how the U.S. legal system struggles to deal with the complexities of the human condition.
