ACB BRINGS BACK L.A.’S MOST ROMANTIC VALENTINE’S DATE

In just a few short years, American Contemporary Ballet’s Astaire Dances has become a Valentine’s tradition for Los Angeles.

The fan-favorite tribute to Hollywood’s golden age and the genius of Fred Astaire is an evening out like it used to be – elegant dance, glamorous clothes, cocktails, entertainers and of course, live music. It’s also a reminder that some of the most romantic moments ever put on film never involved a line of dialogue.

This February, ACB brings back classics that celebrate some of his most famous silver screen moments, including meticulous recreations of choreography from The Band Wagon, Silk Stockings, and You Were Never Lovelier, all performed to live renditions of the music that inspired them: “Dancing in The Dark”, “All of You”, and “I’m Old Fashioned” and more.

ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones says the reason for doing the show is simple: the choreography. “Mozart thought he was writing himself concert music; Shakespeare wrote plays he never even bothered to put down for posterity. Astaire thought he was making dances for himself to perform in movies, but he was also creating one of the most important repertories of the 20th century. As the ultimate partner, his style is one of the best ways of teaching our own dancers how to partner. As an artist, he continues to be revered and envied in equal parts by dancers and choreographers of all genres, myself very much included.”

Astaire Dances opens with a set by Conan O’Brien writer/comedian Brian Kiley and the premiere of a new Astaire-inspired ballet. The company recommends getting tickets early, as shows sell out fast.
