The Secret Garden has only been on Broadway once, from 1991-1993. The run that won three Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, and became instantly beloved for its beautiful score.

What to Watch For

  • The Secret Garden is based on the same-named classic 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
  • The LA cast of The Secret Garden has lots of Broadway star power. Sierra Boggess has starred in The Phantom of the Opera and The Little Mermaid, Julia Lester just headlined Into the Woods, and John-Michael Lyles performed in A Strange Loop, to name a few.
  • The late Secret Garden composer Lucy Simon was the sister of Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician Carly Simon and Emmy-winning singer/journalist Joanna Simon.
  • Director Warren Carlyle has been attached to this production since 2018; in fact, it was originally announced for Broadway in the 2018-19 season. Who knows — maybe this is finally the year!
  • In another classic novel, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the title character says The Secret Garden is her favorite children’s book. Like The Secret Garden, Matilda has also received the musical treatment.
