About Our Dear Dead Drug Lord

Don’t miss the critically acclaimed play’s West Coast premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles. Get Our Dear Dead Drug Lord tickets now at TodayTix!

An exploration of young women’s potential, anger, and power, Our Dear Dead Drug Lord doesn’t hold back any punches. Alexis Scheer’s play follows four teenage girls, the members of the Dead Leaders Club, who try to summon the ghost of a drug kingpin.

The Off-Broadway run was extended three times in New York. The New York Times called it “highly entertaining — equally funny and scary — the play starts off as a hoot and winds up a primal scream.” In its four-star review, New York Theatre Guide called the play “loud and messy and truthful. It is incredibly complicated and a thing of extreme beauty.”

More information about Our Dear Dead Drug Lord

Our Dear Dead Drug Lord elevates the stakes of growing up when the four members of the Dead Leaders Club meet in a treehouse. Set in Miami, Florida, the teenage girls gather together with hopes of summoning the ghost of the drug lord Pablo Escobar. Each teenager carries their own fears and hurts as they grapple with sexism and power structures to find their strength and voice.

Our Dear Dead Drug Lord’s world premiere opened on September 24, 2019, at the WP Theater’s McGinn/Cazale Theatre. The play was originally a co-production between WP Theater and Second Stage Theater. The Off-Broadway production was directed by award-winning director Whitney White. The West Coast production will be directed by Lindsay Allbaugh, the Center Theatre Group’s associate artistic director.

Having grown up in a Jewish-Colombian home in Miami, Florida, this setting is a common thread in Alexis Scheer’s plays. Scheer’s other works,Laughs in Spanish and Christina, both approach coming-of-age stories with humor. Scheer also wrote on HBO Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

In 2020, Our Dear Dead Drug Lord won two Obie Awards for Direction and Design. Scheer received an Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for her writing. Set designer Yu-Hsuan Chen was nominated for the 2020 Outstanding Scenic Design Lucille Lortel Award.

What to Watch For

  • The Kirk Douglas Theatre is the Center Theatre Group's newest theatre. Opening in 2004, the 317-seat venue offers audiences a more intimate theatre experience, ideal for Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, a play featuring a four-member cast.
  • Our Dear Dead Drug Lord repeatedly extended its Off-Broadway run in 2019. Producers extended the play three times throughout its production. A one-week extension ended up being a nine-week extension.
  • Playwright Alexis Scheer co-wrote Bad Cinderella with Emerald Fennell. The new musical, with songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Zippel, played at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre.
  • Our Dear Dead Drug Lord is part of IAMA Theatre Company’s 2022-23 Season. With this season, the theatre company is reclaiming the 2020-21 “lost” theatre season with a 15th anniversary “Jubilee” theatre initiative. IAMA is celebrating diversity by producing works from people of color, women, and the LGBTQIIA+ community.
