More information about Macbeth

Thought to be written in 1606 for King James I, Macbeth is a play infamous for its bloodthirsty, power-hungry story of corruption. Macbeth, a Scottish general, receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become king. Driven by the prophecy and their own paranoia, Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, will do anything to gain the crown.

Actor Will Geer moved to Topanga, California, with his family after being blacklisted from Hollywood during the Red Scare. On his property in Topanga, Geer built a theatre for other blacklisted performers. In 1973, Geer formed his non-profit organization Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum. Today, his daughter Ellen Geer oversees the Theatricum Botanicum as its artistic director.

Ellen Geer directs this production of Macbeth, which features music and is set outdoors beneath a canopy of oak trees. Experience the magic of the classic play al fresco, and get Macbeth tickets today.

What to Watch For

  • Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum includes both a theatre and a garden. Will Geer studied horticulture at the University of Chicago prior to his Hollywood career. The property boasts every plant found in Shakespeare’s plays. Geer and his wife even used their garden to earn a living selling fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
  • Macbeth is infamous in the theatre for bringing bad luck to productions of the play. As superstition goes, saying “Macbeth” in the theatre curses the production. For this reason, Shakespeare’s classic is often referred to as The Scottish Play or The Bard’s Play. Be careful not to utter the name “Macbeth” when you take your seat at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum this summer!
  • In 1849, competing New York productions of Macbeth started a riot. Known as the Astor Place Riot, two actors named Edwin Forrest and William Macready, both playing Macbeth in rivaling productions, argued over whose portrayal of the murderous character was better. The riot that followed left dozens dead and over 100 injured.
