Singer, songwriter, and record producer Evelyn Champagne King burst onto the scene in 1977, at the height of the disco era, with her debut album Smooth Talk. The album featured the hit single “Shame,” which reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, #7 on the Soul chart, and #8 on the Dance chart, and the follow-up single “I Don’t Know If It’s Right,” which was certified Gold.
Next up, in 1981, the single “I’m In Love,” from the album of the same name, was released, and went on to reach #1 on the R&B Singles chart and Dance chart, while also peaking on the Pop chart at #40. Other Evelyn “Champagne” King hits that made their mark in the 1980s include “Love Come Down, “ “Betcha She Don’t Love You” “I’m In Love,” “Action,” “High Horse, “Flirt,” “Hold On To What You’ve Got,” “Kisses Don’t Lie,” and more.
In 2004, that debut single, “Shame,” became one of the first records to be inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.
