About Hamilton at Her Majesty's Theatre Melbourne

HAMILTON is the story of America then, told by America now. A record-breaking masterpiece that has “transformed theatre and the way we think about history.” – The New York Times

The Tony®, Grammy®, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize winning musical is now playing at Her Majesty's Theatre Melbourne.

Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre – a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education.

With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography. HAMILTON has has also received an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Centre Honours.

What to Watch For

  • Hamilton is a biographical musical of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, but how did Lin-Manuel Miranda decide which parts of his life to focus on? Easy, he read a book. While on holiday, Lin-Manuel Miranda read Ron Chernow’s biography and the early ideas for Hamilton were born.

  • Lin-Manuel Miranda gave a work-in-progress performance of the song “Alexander Hamilton” at the White House in 2009. The number would eventually become the show’s opening song.

  • Other musicals that Lin-Manuel Miranda has been involved in include In The Heights and Bring It On. But Hamilton is his standout hit.

  • In London, Hamilton has won seven Olivier Awards from 13 nominations. Currently, it equals the record for most Oliviers won by a musical, tied with Matilda.

  • Its rap song “Guns and Ships” performed by Marquis de Lafayette breaks records as the fastest song in any musical. Whoever raps “Guns and Ships” has to say an average of 6.3 words per second.
